How to do a fly stitchЯк вишивати вилочку
A loose V caught at its point by a small tie, like a fly seen from above. Work it in 2 passes: bring the needle up at each odd number and down at the even number after it.

Step by stepКрок за кроком
- Come up at the top left of the V and go down at the top right, level with it. Do not pull the thread through: leave it hanging on the front as a loop. Come up in the middle, below the top line, inside that loop. Pull gently: the loop closes into a V.Виведіть голку зліва вгорі «галочки» й уведіть справа вгорі, на тому самому рівні. - Go down just below the point of the V, over the thread. This little tie holds the point where it is. A short tie gives a V; a long one gives a Y.Уведіть голку трохи нижче вістря, через нитку. Цей маленький стібок тримає вістря на місці. Короткий стібок дає «галочку», довгий — літеру Y.
Done. Vary the width and the length of the tie, and the same stitch becomes grass, a leaf or a band.

Tips and common mistakesПоради й типові помилки
- Coming up outside the loop: the thread then lies over nothing and the V falls open when you pull.Голка виходить поза петлею: нитка тоді нічого не тримає, і «галочка» розпадається, щойно її потягнути.
- Pulling the V tight enough to flatten it into a straight line; let it keep its angle.Затягування до прямої лінії: «галочка» має зберігати свій кут.
- Going down in the same hole you came up from for the tie: the tie then disappears. It needs a thread or two of cloth under it, across the loop.Закріпка в тій самій дірочці, де вийшла голка: тоді вона зникає. Під нею має бути хоч нитка-дві тканини, упоперек петлі.
