How to do double Brussels stitch

Needle lace worked in pairs of loops with a wide space between pairs, which gives a more open net with a spotted look. Work it in 19 passes: bring the needle up at each odd number and down at the even number after it.

The grid is only for reading the diagram. This stitch is not counted: work it along a line drawn on the cloth, in stitches of a length that suits your thread and the curve.

What it is used forЗастосування

Open fillings in stumpwork and needle lace, attached to the cloth only round the outline.

Step by step

  1. Outline the shape with small back stitches. The lace hangs from them and touches the cloth only at the edges.
  2. With a blunt needle, work from left to right along the top. Make two buttonhole loops side by side on the outline, each sliding under a back stitch with the thread beneath the point, then leave a wide space and make the next two.
  3. Get down just below the row at the side (whipping the side outline, or a small stitch through the cloth as drawn). Work back from right to left. Each pair now goes into one of the deep loops of the row above, so the pairs fall between those before.
  4. Keep turning at the sides and working rows to and fro. The drawing stops one row short: on the last row, take in the bottom outline as well, so the net is held on all sides.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Spaces between pairs too narrow: it looks like a muddled single Brussels. Make them wider than you think.
  • Working both stitches of a pair into different loops: the rows slide out of step. Both go in the same deep loop.
