How to do a Holbein stitchЯк вишивати Гольбейн
A running line out and a running line back that fills its gaps. The line ends up solid on BOTH sides of the cloth — which is why blackwork collars were worked this way. Work it in 4 passes: bring the needle up at each odd number and down at the even number after it.

- The journey out: the zigzag's first rise. The fall is skipped for now.Дорога «туди»: перший підйом зиґзаґу. Спуск поки пропускаємо.
- The second rise. On the back the thread runs exactly along the pieces we skipped.Другий підйом. На вивороті нитка йде рівно тими відрізками, які ми пропустили.
- Turn around. The journey back fills the first skipped fall.Розвертаємось. Дорога «назад» заповнює перший пропущений спуск.
- The second fall — and the zigzag is closed. No stitch is doubled: every piece was travelled exactly once.Другий спуск — і зиґзаґ зімкнувся. Жодного здвоєного стібка: кожен відрізок пройдено рівно раз.
Done. The back looks the same as the front — that is the mark of a true Holbein line.
