The classic light filling for Hardanger windows, and an old one: small open squares on whitework samplers carry it too. Use it to break up a field of plain cut squares.

The window is already cut, and four Kloster blocks stand round it (drawn here much larger than life, so that you can follow the thread). Start under the top block and come up at the edge of the window, by its middle stitch. Going clockwise, slide the needle under the middle stitch of the right block, from the outside in towards the window, with the thread lying under its point. Pull gently: a soft loop forms. From that loop go on to the bottom block in the same way, then to the left block. On the fourth side the eye must close. Pass the needle under the first side, near where it began, then go down at the top block. A small open square, set like a diamond in the window. When the window has bars instead of blocks, the same loops go through the centre of each bar, and the eye is woven as you make the last side of the bars.

Tips and common mistakesПоради й типові помилки

Pulling the loops straight: the eye closes up and pulls the blocks in. The sides should sag very slightly.Петлі затягнуті в струну: вічко закривається й тягне блоки всередину. Сторони мають ледь-ледь провисати.
