Hem stitch worked from the back of the cloth, the thread hidden between the layers of the hem, so that the front shows only small stitches at the foot of the bundles. Work it in 6 passes: bring the needle up at each odd number and down at the even number after it.

Step by stepКрок за кроком
- Withdraw two or three threads and fold the hem up just to the edge of the band, then tack it. You are looking at the back of the cloth, with the fold’s edge along the dotted line. Come up through the hem a little below the band, and go down in the band beyond the first bundle.Висмикніть дві-три нитки, підігніть підгин точно до краю смуги й наметайте. - From the band, slide the needle between the two layers of the hem, and come out through the hem’s top layer just to the right of the bundle. Tips and common mistakesПоради й типові помилки
- Letting the needle catch the front layer on its way through the hem: a dot of thread then shows on the right side. Keep it between the layers.Голка зачіпає нижній шар на шляху крізь підгин: тоді на лиці видно цятку нитки. Тримайте голку між шарами.
- Stitches into the hem that slant as much as in plain hem stitch. Here they should be a bit longer and more upright, or the hem drags sideways.Стібки в підгин такі ж скісні, як у простій мережці. Тут вони мають бути трохи довші й рівніші, інакше підгин тягне вбік.
