Eight straight stitches over two fabric threads into one shared hole — the smallest of the three Algerian eyes, and the one that carries the plain name. Work it in 8 passes: bring the needle up at each odd number and down at the even number after it.

- The four corner rays first. The thread comes up at a corner of the square and dives into the centre — two fabric threads across and two down.
